Flu, Coughs, Colds & how to stay healthy during the winter with Homeopathy

Flu, Coughs, Colds & how to stay healthy during the winter with Homeopathy
Staying Healthy during the winter months.

September is a month when children return to school and the weather begins to change, with this some will get the dreaded coughs, colds and flu but there are ways to keep yourself healthy.

Flu symptoms are more severe than the average cold and they will come on rapidly and will last longer.

Top 5 Signs of Flu

  • Body and muscles will ache
  • Fevers / Chills
  • Fatigue & Weakness
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat and cough

Ways to keep Flu at bay

  • Try to avoid stress
  • Eat a healthy diet of vegetables & fruit rich in vitamins A & C which will support your immune system.
  • Get plenty of fresh air
  • Get a good nights sleep
  • Have regular homeopathic constitutional treatment to boost your immune system and keep you healthy.

If you do find you get flu the best and kindest thing to do is to listen to your body.  Rest is key and it’s important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of fluids.  My favourite drink for flu, sore throats, coughs & colds is hot water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey, freshly chopped ginger & cayenne pepper.

There are some homeopathic remedies that can help with flu symptoms but one thing we should remember is the symptoms are sometimes a sign that the body is having “clear out”. I usually advise my patients not to suppress symptoms with over the counter medicines such as Day/Night nurse, Beechams max etc – encourage the symptoms to come out this will hopefully avoid further complications down the line.  Symptoms should leave your body and not be suppressed.

If however, you do need help with your symptoms I would suggest the following homeopathic remedies:-

Aconite Symptoms come on suddenly, esp. at night. Worse from exposure to cold, dry winds. There is fever, thirst and sweat. Dry, painful cough.
Allium Cepa Good remedy for runny nose & ears with burning discharge.
Arsenicum Chilly, Restless, symptoms usually start in the nose, thin, watery, burning discharge. Copious sneezing. Cold sometimes goes deeper to the chest. Will want to drink small sips of water.
Belladonna The key here is symptoms appear quickly. This is a good fever remedy. High fever, redness and burning. Headaches and pains throbbing.
Bryonia Symptoms come on very gradually. Irritability and will want to be left alone and to be completely still and quiet. There will be thirst. Another good remedy when the cold goes to the chest and there is a dry cough.
Eupatorium Aching bones, thirsty and sweating. Usually accompanied by a headache.
Ferrum Phos This is a good remedy when you feel you are coming down with something and feel a little bit run down with some thirst.
Gelsemium Shivering, muscle weakness & tiredness are a good indication for this remedy. Symptoms develop slowly. Not very thirsty.

Take every 30 minutes for 3 doses, if no change move to next indicated remedy.

Shaking off a Chest Infection with Homeopathy

Chest Infection
“When I get a cold it always goes to my chest”.
This is one of the things people often say to me when I go through their medical history.

Invariably they have a history of taking anti-biotics over the years and it becomes increasingly more difficult and longer to get rid of chest infections and they find they have less energy as their body works harder to fight of the infection.

This is when people may decide to try homeopathy.   Below is a lovely testimonial that I received from someone that tried homeopathy for the first time:-

“I met with Tracey with an open mind about homeopathy. I had been unable to shake off a chest infection and generally felt irritable, lethargic and emotional. I really appreciated the time and care that Tracey took in working out what remedies would help me. Within a very short time my chest infection had completely cleared and I felt energetic, calm and balanced. There were a few instances that previously before the treatment I would have reacted negatively to. However, I have been able to deal with situations in a positive manner and this I can honestly say is due to the remedy. Family, friends and colleagues have also notice a calmer more balanced me about the home and in the office.

Tracey is consistent in her personality, approach and professionalism and the gentle power of homeopathy has helped me to find a new level of health and wellbeing. I am looking forward to continuing working with Tracey and have and will continue to recommend her services”, Ms K W, Kent

Poorly at Christmas time? – Top 4 homeopathic ‘flu remedies

Feeling poorly at Christmas

Are you one of the unlucky people that when you get time off, especially at Christmas time you come down with ‘flu or some other bug?

You are not alone and I know many people who are very rarely sick during the year but as soon as Christmas arrives they fall sick.  One of the reasons for this is because in the run up to Christmas we find ourselves rushing around buying presents, food, planning, collecting friends and family and trying to finish work and projects before taking time off. It is the busiest time of the year. This puts untold pressure on us and our bodies deal with this by producing stress hormones, such as adrenaline. In the short-term adrenaline can help to ward off infection but when we stop for the holiday period we start to relax, our stress hormones drop and this is when we become more susceptible to illness.

Of course not all of us will get sick when we stop and relax, especially if we have been taking care of our diet and making sure we get enough sleep and rest whenever possible, but if you have been working flat out or have been under pressure you probably won’t be surprised if you come down with something especially if that is your normal pattern.

If you do find you become sick over the holiday period it is important to listen to your body and to rest. I thought it might be helpful to share the top 4 homeopathic ‘flu remedies that will certainly help should you fall ill. They should be taken every 2 hours up to 10 doses.

Aconite – ‘flu with restlessness and comes on suddenly with a high fever.   You may have a sore throat and might also feel apprehensive with fear.

Belladonna – ‘flu with high fever and comes on suddenly, your face is red and flushed, throbbing pains, there is confusion and delirium.

Gelsemium – ‘flu with chills and weakness. You have chills up and down your spine, sore throat, there is no thirst despite having a fever. Legs feel weak and shaky, pain in the bones and a bursting headache.

Bryonia – ‘flu with a severe throbbing headache and is made worse by coughing or moving the eyes. There will be a need to drink lots of fluids with dehydration. Irritability with a desire to be at home.

Does your winter cold or cough go to your chest?

Winter Coughs & Colds
Winter Coughs & Colds

This is a common condition for people, especially people with asthma or who have had bronchitis in the past. There is a tendency that an everyday cold or cough, if not monitored, will go deeper to the chest. A visit to the GP will usually be required and invariably a course of antibiotics will be prescribed.

Unfortunately we all know from the news that antibiotics are not working as well as they used to and GPs are now reluctant to prescribe antibiotics as freely as they once did. This is because our bugs and illnesses have become resilient and are not responding to them and super bugs are now emerging.

As a homeopath I consider a cold as a healthy sign, if it moves in the right direction and by that I mean outwards. It means the body is busy fighting off infection and is pushing the symptoms away from the body to the outside eventually leaving the body.

I prefer symptoms to be on the outside rather than inside. This is because if the symptoms begin to go inwards they go deeper into the body, hence the cold that goes to the chest which in itself can have many more serious implications.

This is where homeopathy can help. With a carefully selected remedy it can bring the body back into balance, ideally enabling it to work for itself as it was designed to do, pushing everyday colds away from the body .

Anyone that has received constitutional homeopathic treatment during their life can fight off winter coughs and colds more easily without the need to use over the counter medications.
