Migraines – Can I treat them myself?

Migraines – can I treat them myself?

I suffer from migraines so I know first hand how very painful and debilitating they can be. I used to get them monthly until my homeopath sorted them out for me (yes even homeopaths see other homeopaths for treatment).

Each person experiences migraine symptoms very differently to the next person so if you are self treating it is important to try to match your symptoms as near as possible to the remedy.

Selecting a remedy when you have a migraine can be quite difficult. During the holiday period I experienced an excruciating migraine and had to lie in a darkened room for a day. As a homeopath I have many homeopathic remedies to hand but I was unable to think clearly and be objective.

The remedy however that usually helps me during an acute phase of a migraine is Belladonna. For you and your symptoms the remedy may well be very different but I have listed below some remedies that may help you with a migraine.

Belladonna – Pain is usually right sided. The pain is described as throbbing and pulsating.   Worse for sun, motion and heat. Better when lying in a darkened room and for pressure on painful part.

Glonoinum – Feels like the head will burst with intense pounding. Worse for sun, heat, motion and alcohol. Better when lying in a dark room and for cold applications.

Nat Mur – Feels like lots of “tiny hammers” where the pain is. Pain is usually right sided but can alternate. There can be some visual disturbances and vomiting. Worse in the mornings, sun and eye strain. Better for cold applications and lying in a dark room.

Sanguinara – Pain is usually right sided and starts in the shoulders or neck. There is a burning and throbbing sensation. Menopausal. Worse after missing meals, mornings and as the day progresses. Feels better after sleep and vomiting.

Sepia – Pain is usually left sided headache located above left eye and forehead. Nausea. Motion sickness. Sensitive to light, particularly artificial light. Worse before or during period; pregnancy; menopause. Feels better for pressure, fresh air, after eating, sleeping and lying in the dark.

Homeopathic Treatment for Migraines
As you can see there are many remedies that can help ease a migraine but the best way to treat them is to get to the root cause.  For example, are they hormonal (menopause, pregnancy, ovulation) are they caused by stress or diet, how often do they occur?

If you experience regular migraines and would like to find out how I can help you using homeopathy please feel free to contact me for a no obligation chat.

Homeopathy – Helping Recovery following an Operation

How homeopathy can aid recovery after an operation.

When someone comes to see me for homeopathy they usually have something wrong with them. Like a young lady who took part in my CFS study last December.

Over the last 8 months she has noticed a great improvement in her health on so many levels, she has more energy, depression very rarely and hardly any CFS symptoms. This means she has been able to do more and pursue her hobbies, meet friends.  Previously at weekends she would spend quite a lot of time at home on the sofa and was worried to do too much.

She recently had to have a small operation following an accident. She was dreading it because she told me that she never feels well after surgery and normally gets really sick, lethargic and depressed. I reassured her that because she had been having homeopathic remedies over the last few months she might be pleasantly surprised at how her body copes.

Well this time was indeed different. To help with her recovery from surgery I gave her some additional remedies and asked her to let me know how she was doing when she was able to. She sent me the following message just one day after her operation:-

“Feeling very good!! Pretty much no pain and feeling mentally good”.

These are the words of someone who has come on in leaps and bounds. Her body is now very receptive to the remedies and over the coming months we are clearing various medications that she has taken over the years.

If you would like to find out more about how homeopathy can support you before or after a planned operation  please feel free to contact me.  Or if you would like support before and after a planned operation.

Flu, Coughs, Colds & how to stay healthy during the winter with Homeopathy

Flu, Coughs, Colds & how to stay healthy during the winter with Homeopathy
Staying Healthy during the winter months.

September is a month when children return to school and the weather begins to change, with this some will get the dreaded coughs, colds and flu but there are ways to keep yourself healthy.

Flu symptoms are more severe than the average cold and they will come on rapidly and will last longer.

Top 5 Signs of Flu

  • Body and muscles will ache
  • Fevers / Chills
  • Fatigue & Weakness
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat and cough

Ways to keep Flu at bay

  • Try to avoid stress
  • Eat a healthy diet of vegetables & fruit rich in vitamins A & C which will support your immune system.
  • Get plenty of fresh air
  • Get a good nights sleep
  • Have regular homeopathic constitutional treatment to boost your immune system and keep you healthy.

If you do find you get flu the best and kindest thing to do is to listen to your body.  Rest is key and it’s important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of fluids.  My favourite drink for flu, sore throats, coughs & colds is hot water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey, freshly chopped ginger & cayenne pepper.

There are some homeopathic remedies that can help with flu symptoms but one thing we should remember is the symptoms are sometimes a sign that the body is having “clear out”. I usually advise my patients not to suppress symptoms with over the counter medicines such as Day/Night nurse, Beechams max etc – encourage the symptoms to come out this will hopefully avoid further complications down the line.  Symptoms should leave your body and not be suppressed.

If however, you do need help with your symptoms I would suggest the following homeopathic remedies:-

Aconite Symptoms come on suddenly, esp. at night. Worse from exposure to cold, dry winds. There is fever, thirst and sweat. Dry, painful cough.
Allium Cepa Good remedy for runny nose & ears with burning discharge.
Arsenicum Chilly, Restless, symptoms usually start in the nose, thin, watery, burning discharge. Copious sneezing. Cold sometimes goes deeper to the chest. Will want to drink small sips of water.
Belladonna The key here is symptoms appear quickly. This is a good fever remedy. High fever, redness and burning. Headaches and pains throbbing.
Bryonia Symptoms come on very gradually. Irritability and will want to be left alone and to be completely still and quiet. There will be thirst. Another good remedy when the cold goes to the chest and there is a dry cough.
Eupatorium Aching bones, thirsty and sweating. Usually accompanied by a headache.
Ferrum Phos This is a good remedy when you feel you are coming down with something and feel a little bit run down with some thirst.
Gelsemium Shivering, muscle weakness & tiredness are a good indication for this remedy. Symptoms develop slowly. Not very thirsty.

Take every 30 minutes for 3 doses, if no change move to next indicated remedy.

Holiday Season – Travel & Motion Sickness

Holiday Season – Travel & Motion Sickness

Homeopathy for travel & motion sickness

Travel & Motion Sickness
As a child my parents took my brother and I to Italy for our summer holidays. We didn’t always fly and sometimes we would drive. I always preferred flying because I experienced terrible motion sickness both on the ferry crossing and on the drive around the winding roads of the French & Italian Alps.

So what is motion sickness? The symptoms generally consist of dizziness, fatigue and nausea and can also cause vomiting. It is a disturbance of the inner ear resulting from repeated motion of driving through winding roads, the swell of the sea, even turbulence when traveling by plane. This all causes the sensory receptors to the brain to become over stimulated leading to the feeling of motion sickness.  I wish my parents had known about homeopathy back then.

There are quite a few homeopathic remedies that can be taken but the ones that I find work the best are:-

Borax – This remedy is a great remedy when you feel worse for downward motion e.g. when a plane is landing or when a boat is in a swell with an upwards and downwards motion.

Cocculus – A great remedy for motion sickness with dizziness. There is a feeling of dizziness with waves of nausea and all you want to do is lie down. The thought of any food will make you feel ill. It is worse for fresh air. There may also be some anxiety.

Petroleum – Surprisingly this remedy is worse for fresh air, like Cocculus, but there is less dizziness. There is an empty hungry feeling in the stomach with a dull, heavy headache.

Tabacum – There is extreme nausea with violent vomiting and cold perspiration, the face will be very pale and you will feel better for fresh air.

The beauty of homeopathic remedies are they are free from any side effects such as drowsiness and constipation.  If you would like to find out more about homeopathy and how you can incorporate it into your everyday life for common ailments please feel free to contact me.

Lyme Disease & Homeopathy

Lyme Disease & Homeopathy
Bitten by a tick?

I was asked about Lyme disease and whether homeopathy can help and yes it can but prevention is always better than cure.

If however you have been bitten by a tick I recommend taking Ledum 200c as soon as you notice you have been bitten. It is one of the first aid remedies that everyone should have in their first aid kit.  It is also thought to have a prophylactic value in relation to tetanus, so a worthwhile remedy to keep and it is great for puncture wounds too.

Sadly, not everyone notices that they have been bitten until it is too late or until the bulls-eye rash associated with Lyme appears which can be anytime between 3-30 days after being bitten.

I would still recommend taking Ledum as soon as possible especially as bacteria from a tick bite doesn’t always show up in blood tests until a few months later.

Many people with chronic fatigue or unexplained symptoms have Lyme Disease. Some of the symptoms are-

  • Feeling chilly or have a fever
  • Headaches and/ or dizziness
  • Depression
  • Swollen joints and / or swollen lymph nodes
  • Muscles Pains & Shooting pains
  • Tingling
  • Stiff neck

If you have been diagnosed with Lyme Disease or have chronic symptoms as described above please feel free to contact me to see how I might be able to help you using homeopathy.

Treating Insect Bites & Stings with Homeopathy

Treating Insect Bites & Stings with Homeopathy
Treating insect bites & stings with homeopathy

A few months ago I made a short video about treating bites and stings naturally with homeopathic remedies and they are listed below.

Apis – this is for bites and stings that are burning, red and very swollen

Ledum – excellent remedy for all bites especially when the insect has made a puncture wound and there is intense itching. The area is usually cold to touch but feels better when cold is applied. If you are in a tick infested area I normally recommend taking this for 5 days after being bitten.

Cantharis – Infected area is burning, red, and may even be blistered. This is also a great sunburn remedy.

Hypericum – this remedy is very effective for nerve rich areas of the body, especially where there are shooting pains, numbness or tingling after being bitten.

Calendular Cream or Hypercal Cream – apply to help calm and sooth any irritation.

I always have these remedies to hand, particularly during holidays and during the summer months. If you have any allergies to bites or stings and would like to find out how homeopathy can help please feel free to contact me.  I offer a free 15 minute consultation.

The Heat is On – Homeopathic Remedies for Sunburn

The Heat is On – Homeopathic Remedies for Sunburn
Homeopathic Remedies for Sunburn

Anyone that uses homeopathy will know how effective and gentle it is.  Did you know that there are some homeopathic remedies that can help with sunburn or any kind of burn?  I thought it might be helpful to list them below especially as the summer seems to have officially arrived:-

Arnica If there is any shock around having the burn then take Arnica first. 30 or 200c. Take hourly up to 2 doses.
Urtica Urens This is a good remedy for prickly heat or if the sunburn is mild with stinging and a prickly feeling. Take 30c every hour. This is also available in a cream.
Cantharis This remedy should be considered for painful and blistering sunburn.   It can also be taken for any type of burn. Take 30c every 30 mins.
Causticum This remedy is for severe 3rd degree burns. Take 30c every 30 mins.
Calendula Cream For mild sunburn. This can be really soothing.

As with all homeopathic remedies, as soon as symptoms start to improve they should be STOPPED.   You can also make a homeopathic solution by putting 1 small homeopathic pillule into water and shaking it each time if in a bottle or stirring if in a glass and sipping every 30 minutes (remember to shake or stir each time).

Remember it is always best to avoid midday sun and always wear a sunscreen.

5 Top Uses for Arnica

The top 5 uses of Arnica

Arnica is one of the most popular and useful homeopathic remedies and the one that people are familiar with and will have used. This is the one homeopathic remedy that people are likely to have at home.

The top 5 uses are:-

  1. Bruising –the majority of people will be familiar with this and most families with young children should have Arnica at home. It is also good for aches and pains.
  2. Shock – Arnica is the first remedy to think of when someone is in shock.   For example if you receive bad news or are involved in an accident Arnica will really help in situations like this before prescribing something else.
  3. Jet Lag – not many people know that Arnica will help you to recover quickly from long haul flights.
  4. Childbirth – Arnica will assist with labour if taken when the first contractions begin. If you are expecting and would be interested in finding out more about how homeopathic remedies can help in childbirth please contact me.
  5. Dental work – Arnica taken after dental work will help the healing process. I’ve had wisdom teeth out and didn’t need to take pain killers after – I just used Arnica.

If you have ever experienced Arnica in action you will know how powerful homeopathic remedies are.  Homeopathy can treat a wide range of conditions and   if you would like to talk to me to see how I may be able to help you please feel free to contact me for a no obligation chat.

5 Homeopathic Cough Remedies

5 Homeopathic cough remedies

The newspapers have reported that GP surgeries have seen an increase of patients with a nasty cough and advising people to rest and drink plenty of fluids.  They are not prescribing anti-biotics which is generally what people have come to expect.

I thought it might be useful to list a few remedies that can be used for a cough, although if you have had it for a while and it returns each year it would be best to see a professional homeopath who can prescribe a constitutional remedy individually chosen and suited to you.   Your constitutional remedy will work on many different levels and your overall health will improve, for example, you might have a cough but also experience hay fever during the summer, or you may also have asthma. I can help all other conditions that you might be experiencing at the same time using one constitutional remedy.

Remedies that might help with a cough are shown below, although a constitutional remedy would be more beneficial and deeper acting:-

Aconite – (regular readers will note this is a popular and very useful remedy and is featured in my top 10 first aid remedy guide). The cough violent and is hoarse, dry and painful. It can also cause breathlessness.

Bryonia – your cough is hard, dry and painful and your chest hurts when you cough that you need to hold it. You feel worse in warm rooms and feel better when you sit up and take cold drinks. This remedy is sometimes referred to as “like a bear with a sore head”.

Drosera – This is a deep barking cough and you could find you choke to the point of retching, it can also feel like something is tickling your throat.  It is better sitting up and in open air.

Hepar Sulph – A barking cough and is worse when getting cold or for cold air. There is a lot of mucus which is difficult to bring up.

Spongia – Barking cough and your chest feels full with a feeling that it is being suffocated by it.

5 Signs your Liver might need a detox

5 Signs your liver might need a detox

After almost a month of over indulgence eating lots of rich food and possibly drinking more alcohol than normal, January is usually seen as a month in which to detox and many people decide to participate in “Dry January”.

The first week of January is rather aptly known as “Love your Liver” week. Our liver is one of the hardest working organs of our body.  It breaks down and detoxifies substances in the body and also stores vitamins as well as monitoring and stabilizing blood glucose levels.

If you have over done it during the festive period the chances are you could be experiencing some of the following signs which might suggest that your liver could benefit from a detox:-

  • Indigestion, wind, bloating
  • Pain or discomfort over the liver (right upper abdominal area under the rib cage)
  • Acid reflux/heartburn
  • Tiredness especially in the mornings
  • Irritability and low confidence

Some remedies that I may prescribe for the above and liver complaints are:-

Chelidonium – the patient experiences nausea, wind, and cramping pains radiating to the right shoulder blade. There will be extreme irritability and a preference to lie on their side. Poor appetite with a craving for hot drinks. Will also feel better after eating.

Nux vomica – another remedy for indigestion, constipation, cramps and reflux the patient could also show signs of sensitivity and insecurity when they are in this state.

Lycopodium – the patient usually feels very sluggish in the mornings with difficulty to get out of bed. Bloated after eating anything. Insecurities might also be present.

There are many other remedies that can also be prescribed and they should be carefully selected by a professional homeopath so they are matched with the individual and their symptoms.  If you would like to find out more how I can help using homeopathy please feel free to contact me for a FREE 15 minute chat.
