Homeopathy & Acupuncture for Fertility

In my Valentine’s Day blog of “It Takes Two” I talked about other complementary therapies that works well with homeopathy and Acupuncture is one of them.

Here Alison Arden, a licensed acupuncturist, talks about her practice and how she helps couples who are trying for a baby.

“In Chinese Medicine, the body, mind and spirit are very much interlinked and treated as one. Trying to conceive can be a very emotional time, especially with assisted fertility such as IVF. To have the mind, body and spirit calm and balanced gives couples the best chance of success.

Acupuncture helps by

  • Correcting irregular menstrual cycles
  • Balancing hormones
  • Reducing stress by releasing endorphins (body’s natural painkillers)
  • Increasing the endometrial lining (the uterus)
  • Improving sperm count
  • Boosting ovulation
  • Improving the pelvic blood flow
  • Balancing the immune system
  • Improving general health and energy levels
  • Inducing ovulation in women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)

The optimum time to begin seeing an acupuncturist is three months before IVF or before starting to try for a baby. Ideally a treatment every other week is recommended – just before ovulation, to enhance ovulation and just before a period. If having IVF, an important time for a treatment is after egg collection and before the embryo(s) are placed in the uterus. The day after egg collection is ideal. The next important time is as soon as possible after the embryo is implanted.

Of course acupuncture is not a stand-alone therapy in improving successful conception – the nutrition and lifestyle of the couple is very important. Male fertility has been declining for the past 20 years. Smoking for example, affects sperm and there is research to support the fact that chemicals in plastics such as bottles of water can affect sperm also. Certain prescription drugs can affect sperm as can alcohol. These are just some of the things that can have an effect. Women who have spent years on the contraceptive pill can struggle to conceive and acupuncture can help rebalance the body after stopping the pill. It is worthwhile clients adjusting what they can (in terms of lifestyle and diet) three months before trying for a baby as it takes this length of time for new sperm to develop.

So how does a client know acupuncture is working? Common ways some women have shared are that they see a shift in their menstrual cycle, experience relief from occasional menstrual cramps or PMS, see an improvement in skin health, improved cervical mucus production and/or feel a shift in libido, energy levels and mood. Some women feel no different until they experience conception but in general, most men and women find the treatment relaxing and have a good sense of wellbeing after a few sessions”.

As you can see, there is a lot that can be done naturally with homeopathy and acupuncture hopefully without the need for heavyweight drugs.  If you would like to find out more about Alison her link is below and if you would like to contact me to see how homeopathy can help you with fertility issues please feel free to contact me for a free 15 minute consult.

Help – I’ve had a scan but I’m still worried

I've had a scan but I'm still worried
I’ve had a scan but I’m still worried

I’ve recently been helping Mary*, a young mother who has been experiencing deep rooted anxiety over her health.

When Mary came to see me her main cause of concern was around some pelvic pain that she had been experiencing. She informed me that she had been to her GP who had sent her for a scan and this confirmed everything was okay and clear.

This didn’t however stop Mary from worrying. In fact each time she got any pains, new or old she would always fear the worse. This caused her to worry and panic and consumed her every thought.

I have worked with Mary over the last six months. I have prescribed different remedies every step of the way and at each follow up appointment Mary has made steady progress.  Not only have her physical symptoms improved but her anxieties have reduced and are much easier for her to manage.

I am now fine-tuning Mary’s treatment to help her with her remaining anxiety and I am also working with her to help to raise her energy levels.   My aim is to get Mary to a good level of health and ideally for her anxiety to disappear altogether.

When we are worried about our health or keep stressing over a problem our minds can go into overdrive as we imagine all the possible scenarios and things that might be wrong with us, particularly if we Google our symptoms.  Also when we are in a permanent state of stress and worry this can cause our cortisol levels to rise which over the longterm time may cause adrenal fatigue.

If you are worried about your health or experience any anxieties and you would like to see how I can help you please feel free to contact me for a friendly no obligation chat.

Don’t live with the pain of endometriosis

Don’t live with the pain of endometriosis

Do you experience painful pelvic pain or have been diagnosed with endometriosis?  There is no need to go through the pain or what this lady went through for most of her life.  Below she writes about how I helped her with her symptoms:

“As a sufferer of endometriosis since the age of 15 I was, now aged 55, coming to the end of my tether.  Every month I was dosing up with painkillers but the pain seemed to be worsening and I was losing hope that anything could be done.  The pointless pain was affecting my sanity, my work life and my home life.

After numerous visits to various doctors and specialists, all to no avail, a friend recommended I see a homeopath.  I was very sceptical of this mumbo jumbo voodoo magic called homeopathy but, as they say, when you are desperate, you’ll try anything and so I visited Tracey.  My only regret is that I hadn’t visited her years ago.

After the first treatment I felt a difference. The pain hadn’t exactly gone but it was easily bearable and I wasn’t popping the painkillers in the same way.  I had no idea what was happening but my body was changing.  The second month was even more improved and by the third month I was pain free.  Completely pain free.  I’m now a convert and will sing Tracey’s praises from the rooftops.

Her professional and friendly manner put me at ease and her complete belief in homeopathy was infectious.  No more mumbo jumbo voodoo magic.  Homeopathy is life changing and real.  Thank you Tracey”.

A Glowing Review from a Worried Mother

Back to good health & playing sport again.
*picture for illustrative purposes only.

Over the weekend I received a lovely review from a mother of a teenage boy that I helped in December and who is now participating in his sport again. He had been experiencing tummy pains, exhaustion and had experienced food intolerances since he was a young child.

He had been seeing his GP for this condition for 18 months.   Interestingly his mother is a medical Dr and an ex GP.  She had also done a basic course in homeopathy while she was in practice so she was aware of what homeopathy could achieve.

If you would like to read the review this can be found on my Testimonial Page or on my FB Page

If you or a member of your family would like help with a health issues or would like to find out more then please feel free to contact me. I offer a free no obligation 15 minute consultation to enable people to chat to me and find out more about homeopathy and how the process works.

Migraines – Can I treat them myself?

Migraines – can I treat them myself?

I suffer from migraines so I know first hand how very painful and debilitating they can be. I used to get them monthly until my homeopath sorted them out for me (yes even homeopaths see other homeopaths for treatment).

Each person experiences migraine symptoms very differently to the next person so if you are self treating it is important to try to match your symptoms as near as possible to the remedy.

Selecting a remedy when you have a migraine can be quite difficult. During the holiday period I experienced an excruciating migraine and had to lie in a darkened room for a day. As a homeopath I have many homeopathic remedies to hand but I was unable to think clearly and be objective.

The remedy however that usually helps me during an acute phase of a migraine is Belladonna. For you and your symptoms the remedy may well be very different but I have listed below some remedies that may help you with a migraine.

Belladonna – Pain is usually right sided. The pain is described as throbbing and pulsating.   Worse for sun, motion and heat. Better when lying in a darkened room and for pressure on painful part.

Glonoinum – Feels like the head will burst with intense pounding. Worse for sun, heat, motion and alcohol. Better when lying in a dark room and for cold applications.

Nat Mur – Feels like lots of “tiny hammers” where the pain is. Pain is usually right sided but can alternate. There can be some visual disturbances and vomiting. Worse in the mornings, sun and eye strain. Better for cold applications and lying in a dark room.

Sanguinara – Pain is usually right sided and starts in the shoulders or neck. There is a burning and throbbing sensation. Menopausal. Worse after missing meals, mornings and as the day progresses. Feels better after sleep and vomiting.

Sepia – Pain is usually left sided headache located above left eye and forehead. Nausea. Motion sickness. Sensitive to light, particularly artificial light. Worse before or during period; pregnancy; menopause. Feels better for pressure, fresh air, after eating, sleeping and lying in the dark.

Homeopathic Treatment for Migraines
As you can see there are many remedies that can help ease a migraine but the best way to treat them is to get to the root cause.  For example, are they hormonal (menopause, pregnancy, ovulation) are they caused by stress or diet, how often do they occur?

If you experience regular migraines and would like to find out how I can help you using homeopathy please feel free to contact me for a no obligation chat.

Feeling happy or sad as we approach 2018?

Feeling happy or sad as we approach 2018
Feeling happy or sad as we approach 2018

This is a funny old time of year. I always liken it to a “no man’s land”.  The festivities of Christmas have passed and we await the new year, some of us are excited and happy but others may be feeling a little bit sad or depressed.

For me it’s a time to catch up with friends, reflect, read, restore my batteries and generally slow down. Then once the New Year arrives it’s full steam ahead. I am ready with new hopes, full of energy and enthusiasm and most importantly continue to help people feel healthier and happier.  It wasn’t always like this for me but that all changed when I saw a homeopath for the first time 18 years ago and it changed my life.

For some, this time of year can be extremely difficult. Some might be looking back and can’t bring themselves to think about what the future might hold. Others might not be able to let go of a past hurt, they may have had a sickness and aren’t as able as before, others may have had a bereavement. There are many reasons why this time of year can be tough and people feel sad.

I know this because January is one of my busiest months as I help people to overcome health issues, worries,  feeling sad and particularly those who experience the January Blues.

People that came to me at the start of last year have all told me that they feel so much happier and more positive. Some haven’t had to use their SAD lamps, others have not been affected by things that would have caused them to react, others are now able to cope with situations that might have previously caused them anxiety or a meltdown.

Here are some testimonials from some of the people I’ve helped.

So how can I help you to feel healthier and happier for 2018?
People always tell me that it really helps having someone to talk to who just listens and is non-judgmental.  The first consultation (which is up to 1.5 hours) and this alone can be extremely therapeutic, enables me to prescribe a remedy that matches you and your unique symptoms. I have over 3,000 remedies to choose from so there will be one that is just right for you.

All this can also be done from the comfort of your own home (via Skype). I have patients here in the UK, Europe and the US.

If you would like to have a chat to see how I can help you to feel better and help make 2018 your best year please contact me to book a free no obligation 15 minute call.

HELP I’m approaching the menopause

HELP I'm approaching the menopause
HELP I’m approaching the menopause

Linda* was 47 when she came to see me. She was approaching the menopause (peri-menopausal), depressed, experiencing memory loss, panic attacks and hot flushes. She also experienced insomnia and restless legs.

Linda had moved to the UK from SA with her husband and children. She found the lifestyle here in the UK very different. She missed her friends and told me that she’d had a difficult relationship with her mother.  She said she was struggling at work especially as she kept forgetting things and said she didn’t feel she was as sharp as she used to be and she felt “old”.

She was getting hot flushes 2-3 times a day but none during the night but she was unable to sleep due to anxiety and her restless leg syndrome. She was bloated and had constipation. She had daily headaches and had become extremely sensitive to noise.

She told me that she felt she was no longer in control and it was causing her to have panic attacks. Anxiety and panic attacks are common for women approaching or going through the menopause.

I spent some time on Linda’s case to find the best remedy that fitted her symptoms. As a homeopath I have over 3000 remedies that I can choose from.   I prescribed Carc 200.

Linda returned for her follow up appointment 5 weeks later.   She told me that her headaches had gone. She’d had no panic attacks and her work had become more manageable and she felt her memory had improved.   She’d only had one really bad hot flush and that was when she was on the tube and it had stopped in between stations and she began to panic and she felt like she was going to die. Her restless leg syndrome was only happening very occasionally and as a result she was getting more sleep.

Linda continued to see me for a few more months and all her peri-menopausal symptoms improved as did her overall mood and wellbeing. She was much happier, she was enjoying life far more and her husband had also noticed a huge change. She said she hadn’t known what all the fuss was about.  She gave the remedies 10 out of 10.

The menopause can be a troubling time for women especially with all the changes that are going on internally with our bodies but it really doesn’t have to be this way.

Homeopathy supports women approaching or going through the menopause this is because it helps on all levels without the need to take synthetic hormones such as HRT which cause disruption to our endocrine system.

If you are peri-menopausal or are worried about the menopause please feel free to contact me as I offer a free 15 minute chat where you can talk to me and I can let you know how I might be able to help you with your symptoms using homeopathy.

Painful Periods each month?

Painful periods?

Rachel came to me see me with painful periods (Dysmenorrhea). She was 35, married and didn’t have any children.

She told me that the pain started about a year ago and had got progressively worse, usually having to take to her bed for the second day of her period.  She experienced severe cramping pains and nausea. Her periods were heavy and lasted for 7 days, during which time she would be exhausted with zero energy.

Every other month was exceptionally bad and she was having to take more and more time off work. She had been to her GP and had tests but they were inconclusive and she was told “periods were painful”.

Her mother had to have a hysterectomy in her late forties and she was now worried that this might be on the cards for her. She told me she felt huge guilt because she had delayed having children and still wasn’t even sure if she wanted them.    She didn’t however want a hysterectomy because that would take the decision away from her. This was her biggest fear. She told me she liked to be in control of everything in her life.

She was exhausted and fed up with the pain every month, no one seemed to understand. She told me she was feeling extremely upset. When I asked her why she told me that her husband didn’t seem keen to start a family.  She was worried that due to her painful periods there might be complications and she was leaving it too late, time was ticking.

Whilst taking the case history, Rachel told me that she had always sailed through her periods and never even noticed them.   She had started taking the pill at 16 and whilst she’d had a few breaks over the years she decided to stop taking it a about 15 months ago.  It took three months to get a period and only in the last few months had they become more regular (28-33 days).

The pill and HRT are synthetic hormones which disrupt our endocrine system and which in turn has a knock on effect to other parts of our mind and body.

I prescribed Rachel a remedy to help with her emotions and to help rebalance her hormones.  I  asked her to come back to see me in 6 weeks time. This length of time gives the remedy time to work and we then assess the remedy action.

When Rachel returned she said she felt much calmer and the pain had been manageable. I continued to see Rachel for approximately 6 months, prescribing different remedies when required. Over the course of her treatment her periods regulated to 30 days and were much lighter, the pain was minimal and she had more energy.  On her last visit she was so happy because her husband had agreed to start a family and they were now trying for a baby.

Many women come to see me for hormonal issues such as period pain which can be due to a hormonal imbalance or because they have been diagnosed with Poly Cystic Ovaries (PCOS), fibroids, endometriosis.  They may even be peri-menopausal or going through the menopause.   They may also be experiencing anxieties, mood swings and confidence issues.  Whatever the reason homeopathy can usually help especially because it gets to the root cause and treats each person individually.

If you would like to find out how I may be able to help with period pains, menopause or any symptoms you may be experiencing please feel free to contact me for a free 15 no obligation chat.

Have you ever taken the pill and would like to detox?

Have you ever taken the pill?
Have you ever taken the pill?

Have you ever taken the pill and would like to detox?  This can be done using homeopathy.

I see many women in my practice who like myself have taken the pill in the past. They usually seek help because they are experiencing depression, mood swings, PMS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, painful periods or may even be trying to start a family.

Using homeopathy I work with them to rebalance their hormones. One of the methods I am using more frequently alongside constitutional prescribing is to do a homeopathic detox of the pill.

The pill is a synthetic hormone and because it works on the whole of the endocrine system it causes lots of disruption to our bodies which will continue long after we stop taking the pill.

I’ve recently been helping a lovely lady who has been trying to get pregnant and at her last consultation I decided to do a detox of the pill, which she hasn’t taken for many years. She has PCOS and has always felt her body wasn’t reacting how it should, cycles as long as 70 days if at all.   She is currently doing an 8 week pill detox and I have also prescribed her constitutional remedy which takes into account her individual symptoms that are unique to her.  Today she sent me the following message:-

Oh my word, Tracey! Those remedies are definitely doing something. I’ve been all over the place this week . . . . feeling anxious like a failure, low self esteem, really cross, knackered, bit of pain too. Today cycle has started on day 40. The lead up to it has been awful. I’ve had every symptom, which is GOOD because I normally don’t get any! I’ve even got spots”.

It is important to note that whilst most people wouldn’t see this as an improvement, she is very happy because she has been without any symptoms for many years and as a result she has hated her body for not working how it should. I’ve never known anyone to be that happy about getting spots but what we should realise is the healing process is taking place.

We now have a reaction and all the above symptoms show that the remedy is acting and working. She is only half way through the detox but as she progresses through it I expect the symptoms to improve, the negative effects of the pill will be cleared, her hormones will be rebalanced and hopefully other things will start to happen and I will continue to treat her with constitutional remedies.

If you have had the pill and are experiencing mood swings, PMT or other symptoms and would like to talk to me about how I can help please contact me for a free 15 minute consultation.

Why does my child keep getting earache?

Homeopathy & Ear Infections

I am asked on a regular basis about whether there are any homeopathic remedies that can be used for earache and infections (Otis Media).   So I thought it might be helpful to put together a chart of the most common remedies that you can try for acute earache and ear infections.

If however your child keeps getting repeated earache and has a history of taking anti-biotics we need to look at why this is. If you are worried please contact me for a free no obligation chat to discuss how we can get to the root cause and hopefully avoid taking anti-biotics in the future which are proving to be less effective.

Aconite The keynote with this remedy is sudden onset, particularly after being out in the cold. The child will also be very fearful and will be very thirsty for cold drinks.
Belladonna Again the symptoms will come on very quickly. High temperature, red and throbbing and intensely painful.
Chamomilla The pain will be excrutiating and the child maybe very bad tempered and very irritable. Will also pull on the ear.
Ferrum Phos The pain will come on gradually and can also be linked to sore throats.   A good remedy to use in the early stages.
Hepar Sulph Sharp pain with discharge. Throbbing and decreased hearing.
Mercurius Pains may extend to throat and mouth. Swollen Glands and offensive breath. The child can be sweaty and thirsty. Itchy ears, boils. Yellow nasal discharge which can also bleed.
Pulsatilla Pains will be changeable. Child will be clingy and weepy and will want to be held or comforted. Can come on after getting cold. They will feel worse in warm stuffy rooms.

If you would like to find out more about how I can help your child with recurrent earache and ear infections please feel free to contact me for a free no obligation chat.
