Tears of a Clown – Depression and hiding behind a smile

tears-of-a-clown“Now if there’s a smile on my face
It’s only there trying to fool the public”

The lyrics of the song Tears of a Clown seem to sum up how some people dealing with anxiety and depression learn to conceal their feelings from loved ones, friends and work colleagues.

On the outside it might appear that they are coping and doing every day things normally but underneath the brave face they are suffering. Their symptoms can range from low self-esteem, panic attacks, high anxiety and insomnia to name just a few. Behind that smile they can often be feeling ashamed and worthless.

Many comedians hide behind a persona and mask, for example, Ruby Wax, Stephen Fry and David Walliams who all have a history of depression.

Hiding our true feelings everyday takes its toll and eventually compounds the pressure and the longer it continues the harder it can be to recover.
