Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the genital area causing lots of distress and discomfort. It mainly affects women, particularly during or post menopause but it can also also affect men and children. Early intervention and the right care can make a huge difference.
What causes Lichen Sclerosus
The exact cause is unknown, with studies showing conflicting reports. It is however thought to be related to hormonal changes experienced during menopause, trauma or to an auto-immune response.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms can vary from person to person but the key symptoms are:-
- Itching and burning
- Discomfort
- White patches of skin
- Pain during sex
- Atrophy
- Scarring
- Thinning skin with tears and cuts
- Stinging while urinating
Lichen Sclerosus can sometimes be mis-diagnosed or confused with other conditions such as UTI’s, cystitis or vaginal atrophy because they share some similar symptoms such as:-
Cystitis– burning, irritation and stinging and pain while urinating
Atrophy – thinning and dryness of the vulva area which can be common especially in menopause.
Conventional Treatment for Lichen Sclerosus
- Steroid creams – whilst they can relieve the itching and help to calm the area they can over time cause the skin to thin causing further damage to the area.
- Topical Hormone cream
- Laser Therapy
- Emollients
- Surgery - in extreme cases surgery may also be recommended
