Since the age of 4 I have had a huge fear of the dentist until I discovered hypnotherapy which helped me to overcome my dental phobia.
If you are a child of the 60s or 70s you will probably remember growing up in the time of “drill and fill”. My Mum took me (or I should say dragged me) to the dentist every six months. I can’t recall the exact age when I had my first filling, but I do remember it was torture. Injections weren't used and they would drill right into the tooth.
As the dentist drilled into my tooth I would my head to try to avoid the drill. The dentist and dental nurse would try to calm me with words of "it's almost done" and to "SIT STILL". Sometimes I managed to escape from the chair, refusing any more treatment. This caused my Mum much embarrassment.
It wasn't long before every single molar was filled with amalgam. It is now thought that amalgam may have health implications. Today dentists are no longer permitted to use amalgam in children under 15. If you would like to find out more about amalgam/mercury fillings see the links below.
As an adult I took responsibility for my own health. I continued with regular dental checks. During my 40s I discovered I had periodontal disease. This was upsetting especially after all the care and time I had spent at the dentist. I was informed that it had nothing to do with dental care or hygiene it was just bad luck. It could also be hereditary.
I was advised it would need careful management and specialised periodontal care if I wanted to “hold on” to my teeth. This has involved quarterly visits to the hygienist and yearly visits to the periodontist.
Fast forward to today and I have totally banished my dental phobia with hypnotherapy and the power of my mind.
My hygienist who sees me every 3 months has seen a dramatic difference in my behaviour which is now calm and relaxed. She has asked me what I think about during treatment. I just smile and say I go into my “relaxed state”.
I used to lie there stiff as a board, jaw clenched and squeezing a stress ball, named Henry. That has all changed since overcoming my fear. She is now able to reach every part of my mouth more easily than before. She has been so impressed with the changes that she have even recommended me to some of her patients.
