When you see a homeopath for the first time you might be surprised by the number of questions we ask. This is because homeopathy looks at the whole symptom picture and not just isolated symptoms.
Homeopathy is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, it is a highly personalised system of medicine that respects the uniqueness of each person. This is why consultations take time and why we ask so many questions.
Every little detail matters, from the way you describe your pain and the emotions you may be feeling with it. This helps to build a complete symptom picture to find the most tailored remedy for you to restore balance gradually and naturally.
Symptoms are not random, they are the body’s way of signalling an imbalance. Therefore by looking at the whole symptom picture including physical symptoms, emotional state, past health history, and even personality—I can begin to find a remedy that will help you.
Let’s take migraines for example, I will ask about your sleep, any food cravings or how you feel about the weather, any stress you may be under.
I may see five people with migraines but they may need completely different remedies because they are carefully selected to the person and not the “migraine”.
Here are just a few examples of details that can make a big difference in remedy selection:
- Does your headache feel like a throbbing pain or a tight band around your head?
- Is it worse in the morning or evening?
- Does fresh air help or make it worse?
- Do you crave salty snacks or sweets?
- Do you dislike warm rooms or feel cold all the time?
- Are you feeling irritable, weepy, or withdrawn along with your physical symptoms?
These details help to build a whole symptom picture and enable me to find the best remedy for you and your unique symptoms.
The role of your emotional symptoms
Equally your emotions also play a huge role in your overall health. Stress, anxiety, grief, or trauma can manifest physically, which may lead to headaches, digestive issues, or skin conditions many months or even years later.
I will take time to understand not just how you feel physically but also how you respond to challenges in your life. For example do you tend to bottle things up, or do you express your emotions freely? Do you feel restless, anxious, or exhausted? All of this helps me to choose a remedy that fits with your emotional state as well as your physical symptoms.
Looking for patterns
Another reason I ask many questions is to recognize patterns. Symptoms rarely appear in isolation—there is often a deeper connection between various complaints. For example:
- A child with recurring ear infections might also have a history of digestive issues or eczema as a baby.
- A woman suffering from severe PMS might also experience mood swings and migraines at certain times of the month.
- Someone with joint pain might notice that it worsens in damp weather and improves with movement.
Again, by looking at these patterns, it is possible to understand the root cause and select the most suitable remedy for you to help you to feel better on all levels. If you would like to find out more please book a free 20 minute call.
